Can You Install Solar Panels on a Conservatory Roof?

Sustainability has never been more important and we all have a collective responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint. As more homeowners than ever embrace environmentally friendly practices, the demand for solar panels has grown exponentially. If you’re considering the installation of solar panels at your home, you may have some queries. One particular question that often crops up is whether it is possible to install solar panels on your conservatory roof.

To celebrate Net Zero week, the team here at Nu-Look Conservatory Roof Solutions has written this article detailing everything you need to know.

What are the benefits of solar panels?

Once thought of as a high-tech, unobtainable luxury, solar panels are increasingly prevalent in homes across the country, and it’s little wonder. They offer a myriad of benefits to any property, including:

  • Reduced energy bills: With energy bills reaching unprecedented heights, solar panels have emerged as a cost-effective solution to combat soaring costs. By eliminating your reliance on traditional power sources, you can reduce your energy bills. Any surplus energy that is generated can be pumped back into the National Grid, meaning your solar panels can even earn you money.
  • Increased property value: Solar panels are a highly sought-after feature and, when the time comes to sell your home, they are likely to raise the value of your property — you may even recoup your initial investment.
  • Decreases carbon footprint: We all need to do our bit to become more sustainable, and solar panels generate clean and renewable energy that doesn’t emit harmful greenhouse gases.
  • Low maintenance: With no moving parts or complex mechanisms, solar panels generally require very little in the way of maintenance to keep them running efficiently — they simply need the occasional clean.

Can I install solar panels on a conservatory roof?

The short answer is, yes, you can install solar panels on a conservatory roof. In fact, this is probably the ideal location to position them as conservatory roofs typically offer a large surface area that is exposed to sunlight throughout the day, particularly if the conservatory is south facing. Installing conservatory roof solar panels can even make maintenance easier, as they are more accessible for cleaning and inspection.

When can’t you install solar panels on a conservatory roof?

If your conservatory roof is constructed from polycarbonate, you may not be able to install solar panels on it for a number of reasons. Firstly, solar panels are heavy and require a roof that can properly support their weight. Polycarbonate roofs aren’t as sturdy as solid conservatory roofs, so may not be able to bear this additional load.

Furthermore, solar panels typically have a lifespan of approximately 25 years, whilst polycarbonate roofing is only expected to last for around 10-12 years. This means that your roof may require a complete replacement before your solar panels reach the end of their lifespan. You can rectify this problem by having a solid roof replacement carried out, which will effortlessly carry the weight of your new solar roof panels whilst having a much longer life expectancy. Additionally, a solid roof can help to regulate the temperature of your conservatory, further improving energy efficiency and ensuring a more comfortable living space throughout the year.
