How to Tell if you Need to Replace your Conservatory Roof

Did you know it was possible to replace your conservatory roof? Many homeowners have never even heard of conservatory roof replacement or didn’t realise that it was an option. Replacing the roof has a number of benefits, but overall it makes it a more comfortable place to spend time. If you have a conservatory, keep reading to find out how to tell if you should consider a conservatory roof replacement.

You struggle to keep your conservatory warm when it’s cold outside, but it’s always too hot in the summer

One of the most common issues that homeowners find prevents them from making the most of their conservatory is the fact that they can never get it to a comfortable temperature. It could be that it traps the heat and makes it unbearably hot in the summer, or it loses warmth making it too cold in the cooler months and is too expensive to heat to a comfortable temperature.

Traditional glass roofs are poorly insulated, so when you’re turning up the heating to try to keep warm in the winter, you’re likely to be losing money thanks to the lost warmth. On the other hand, when you want to keep cool in the summer, all of the extra glass means that heat is trapped in the conservatory, which is great if you want a sauna, not so great if you want a functional, comfortable room.

Your heating bill is higher than average

If you often feel like you’re overpaying for your electricity bill, and have tried everything you can to cut it down, there’s probably something larger at fault. Because traditional conservatory roofs are so poorly insulated, a lot of heat escapes through them. So you may find that you’re constantly turning the heating up and not feeling the effects in the autumn and winter. Find out more about keeping your conservatory warm in our blog post.

Your conservatory is full of drafts that you can’t find the source of

It’s a horrible feeling when you can feel a draft coming from somewhere – it’s cold, and uncomfortable, and prevents you from relaxing. It’s even worse when you can’t work out where it’s coming from. An old, worn conservatory roof could be full of gaps that are letting cold air in, so if you often feel a draft in your conservatory that’s not from an obvious source, such as an open window, it’s time you upgraded your conservatory roof.

It leaks when it’s raining

Ever noticed a puddle on the floor of your conservatory? Or has it dripped on your head while you’ve been spending time in there? Older conservatory roofs can often be full of leaks, and you may find that even if you try to patch up the source of the leaks, the rain always finds a way in. With a leaky roof, you’ll find that you’re constantly trying to repair the areas that are causing the leak, when instead a full conservatory roof replacement is often the most efficient option.

The sound of the rain is too loud

Many people love the sound of rain when they’re safe inside, it’s especially effective at sending some people off to sleep. That is of course when it’s not too loud. If the sound of the rain is almost deafening, it’s likely because you have an old conservatory roof. Replacing your conservatory roof with a new one will reduce the sound of the rain to a normal comfortable level.

There’s too much glare when it’s sunny

Traditional polycarbonate conservatories feature fully transparent roofs, whilst it may be nice to look up and see the sky, you’ll probably spend most of your time shielding your eyes from the sun, or struggling to see the screen of your TV, phone, laptop or tablet because of the glare. Solid conservatory roofs are the perfect solution as they prevent most glare, read more here.

Your conservatory roof is visibly damaged

If the wood is rotting, or the frames are cracked, discoloured or damaged, or if there are small chips and cracks in the glass or any other visible damage, you’ll need to consider conservatory roof replacement to massively improve the look of your home. Attempting to repair small areas will likely just be temporary fixes and not a permanent solution.

Why is conservatory roof replacement the best option?

You may have looked into conservatory roof repairs in an attempt to find a solution for any of the above issues, but the likelihood is that repairs will probably not be the answer to your problems. Many conservatory owners find that they spend more time and money constantly trying to keep up with the repairs as their conservatory roof fails so often.

What are the options for conservatory roof replacement?

The best option for conservatory roof replacement is a solid roof option. With tiled or slate conservatory roofs you avoid all of the drawbacks of glass roofs, such as glare, poor temperature control, and too much noise when it rains. Solid roofs can be designed to match the exterior of any home, so they look much better. Find out more on our solid conservatory roofs page.

A very efficient first rate service. The team stripped off the old polycarbonate roof, custom made a new framework, insulated it and replaced the roof with 'tiles'. A day or two later a chap plastered the new ceiling. We were so impressed with the whole operation and how streamlined it was, but even more so with the finished room. We have achieved exactly what we wanted and we love it!

From the moment the representative came and quoted me a price and the work involved I was pleasantly surprised at the price and agreed instantly. On the fitting day the two chaps arrived on time and after discussing plans with me they got straight to work. Adam(Lukasz) and Sol(Smart)worked together as a team and the roof appeared before our eyes in hours. Finally the finish they achieved and the care taken was of a high standard. Lastly although I said I would clear up they insisted and left the garden as they found it. Many thanks to all involved

STUNNING TRANSFORMATION. Had a large P shape conservatory with a Poly sheeted panel roof which were coming to the end of their life, for years had been having companies arrive and push for a sale, in early May a new "Checkatrade" leaflet arrived and Nu-Look name took my eye. Salesman Gavyn came with samples to show construction, liked what we heard so went with Nu Look, next step Matt the surveyor approved the build agreeing it could go a head. Week of build weather looked horrendous but it held off, Gareth and Archie arrived and what professionals they were, turned up on time and made sure all materials were on hand to complete the work. They needed to deconstruct and construct framework to allow the electrical work by "Dixie" and plastering by Brett and Darren to go a head, watching Gareth cut those angled sections more so for the valley was outstanding, such a craftsman and Archie was kept on his toes. Same with Brett and Darren outstanding plaster work and gave great advice when to paint ceiling due to hot weather, Dixie finished LED lighting. We also went for building control which Nu -Look deal with via Stroma. Must not forget Emily in the office, any issues she was on it. We opted for the £100 deposit on agreement and the Novuna finance route, which we paid off soon after with an additional cost of £29 to do so, great finance company, web site and communications excellent. We had a conservatory and now have a garden room and already in these very hot conditions we feel a difference much more comfortable, so if you are thinking about replacing those poly sheets give NU-Look a call, glad we did. Thankyou all from Roger and Sandra.

We recently had a new tiled conservatory roof fitted by Nu-Look and we couldn’t be happier with the result. From start to finish all the staff were friendly and helpful. The salesmen was not pushy, he gave me a honest opinion on what needed doing and didn’t try to oversell. I would highly recommend Nu-Look to anyone that is looking to upgrade there conservatory roof to a tiled one. It’s made such a difference especially that we have been able to use it during this heat wave.

Nu-look have done a fantastic job of replacing my old poly carbonate roof with a solid roof. I can't recommend them highly enough, from the initial consultation with Gavyn, to the surveyor, and all of the tradesmen involved.

Excellent company. This is a great company wth a great product. I wanted to insulate my conservatory roof. I had several companies around to quote for the work. Nu-Look were the only company where the representative took time to listen to what my problem was and discuss a proposed solution. All the others simply tried to press a product on me without listening to the customer. Additionally all the other companies offered their “solution” at ridiculously high prices. If you want a builder who listens to his clients problem and proposes a solution that meets the client’s needs not theirs then use Nu-Look for unparalleled quality and value for money. Following my acceptance of the quote I was visited by a very professional surveyor who was like every other person associated with the company being polite and keen to answer any questions I had. When the tradesmen arrived they were bang on time. They undertook the installation quickly and to a high standard. They were professional and polite throughout. I would recommend Nu-Look without hesitation. Jeremy M - Milton Keynes
