Why Your Conservatory Is So Cold (And How to Fix It)

You step into your conservatory on a winter morning and instantly feel the difference. The rest of your home feels warm and comfortable, but this room feels chilly and uninviting.

Many homeowners wonder why their conservatory feels so cold when winter arrives. What should be a relaxing, light-filled space can suddenly become the coldest room in the house.

It can be frustrating. You invested in a conservatory to enjoy extra living space, yet during winter, you might avoid using it altogether.

The good news is that this problem is very common, and in most cases, there are clear reasons behind it. Once you understand what is causing the heat to escape, it becomes much easier to find the right solution.

In this article, you’ll discover why conservatories often feel so cold, the most common causes of heat loss, and practical ways to keep your conservatory warm during winter with both simple improvements and longer-term solutions.

Why Is My Conservatory So Cold?

Heat naturally rises. In a conservatory, warm air usually rises straight to the roof. If the roof does not provide adequate insulation, heat escapes quickly.

Think about how much glass surrounds a typical conservatory. While this design brings in beautiful natural light, it can also make temperature control more difficult. Glass and thin roofing materials allow heat to pass through more easily than insulated walls.

Older roofing materials also play a part. Many conservatories were built using polycarbonate panels or lightweight glazing. At the time, these materials were widely used, but they did not always provide sufficient insulation to keep the space warm.

This combination of rising heat, thin roofing materials, and large glazed areas explains why so many homeowners struggle to keep their conservatory warm once temperatures start to drop.

Common Causes of Conservatory Heat Loss

Polycarbonate Roofs

Polycarbonate roofs were once the standard option for conservatories. They allow plenty of light into the space, but they don’t always perform well when it comes to insulation.

During winter, heat escapes through the panels quite easily. In summer, the opposite happens, and the room can become uncomfortably hot.

Glass Panels

Glass plays an important role in the conservatory design. It creates a bright, open feel that many homeowners love.

However, large glass surfaces can allow heat to escape faster than solid insulated walls. If the glazing is older or less energy efficient, the temperature inside the conservatory can change quickly.

Lack of Insulation

Many conservatories were built without the same insulation standards as the rest of the house. Without proper insulation in the roof or ceiling, warm air simply drifts away.

Older Building Regulations

Before building regulations changed, conservatory roofs often had to be mostly translucent. This meant materials like polycarbonate were commonly used even though they did not provide the best thermal performance.

How to Keep a Conservatory Warm in Winter

If you’re trying to figure out how to keep your conservatory warm during winter, there are a few simple things you can try first.

These solutions may not fix the root problem completely, but they can help improve short-term comfort.

Use Thermal Blinds or Curtains

Thermal blinds add an extra layer between the glass and the inside of your conservatory. This helps reduce the amount of heat escaping.

Closing them during colder evenings can make the room feel noticeably warmer.

Add Soft Furnishings

Rugs, cushions, and thicker curtains can make a space feel warmer. They help trap heat and reduce the cold feeling that can come from hard flooring or large glass surfaces.

Consider Heating Options

Portable heaters or additional radiators can help warm the room quickly. Some homeowners also install underfloor heating to make the space more comfortable during winter.

Seal Draughts

Have you noticed small gaps around doors or windows? Even small draughts can let cold air into the room. Sealing these gaps can make a surprising difference.

These changes can help improve comfort during the colder months, but in many cases, the biggest source of heat loss sits right above you.

This is where conservatory roof insulation becomes important.

Why Conservatory Roof Insulation Makes the Biggest Difference

Most of the heat inside a conservatory escapes through the roof. Warm air rises, so if the roof doesn’t retain it, heat quickly dissipates.

Improving conservatory roof insulation can make a dramatic difference to the temperature inside the room.

Modern roofing systems use multiple insulation layers that help trap warmth inside during winter while preventing overheating during summer. These roofs are designed to create a more balanced indoor temperature throughout the year.

Instead of thin panels, many systems feature insulated interior ceilings and robust exterior roofing materials. These layers work together to keep warmth inside the space.

Professionals who specialise in conservatory upgrades often encounter this issue. Teams such as Nu-Look Conservatory Roof Solutions have worked on thousands of conservatory roof improvements and frequently find that poor insulation is the main reason homeowners struggle with cold conservatories.

With more than 40 years of combined experience and over 4,000 installations, their installers often help homeowners transform rooms that once felt unusable during winter.

By improving conservatory roof insulation, many conservatories can become comfortable spaces that you can enjoy all year round.

Making Your Conservatory Comfortable All Year Round

If temporary fixes are not enough, modern roofing upgrades can offer a more permanent solution.

Many homeowners who want to keep their conservatory warm throughout winter eventually consider upgrading the roof itself.

Solid Conservatory Roofs

Solid roofs are built with insulated frameworks that help maintain a steady indoor temperature. They also make the conservatory feel more like a natural extension of your home.

Tiled Conservatory Roofs

Tiled roofs combine durability with improved insulation. They can also enhance the property’s overall appearance.

Insulated Conservatory Ceilings

Sometimes homeowners choose to add an insulated internal ceiling beneath their existing roof. This can improve conservatory roof insulation without replacing the entire structure.

Modern Glass Roofs

Newer glass roofing systems are designed with better insulation than older versions. They still allow natural light into the room while helping maintain a more comfortable temperature.

Upgrading the roof can significantly improve the way your conservatory feels throughout the year.

Making Your Conservatory a Space You Can Enjoy

If your conservatory feels too cold to use during winter, you are not alone. Many homeowners eventually look for better, long-term solutions rather than relying on temporary fixes to keep their conservatory warm.

Speaking with a specialist can help you understand the options available to improve insulation and comfort.

At Nu-Look Conservatory Roof Solutions, you can arrange a free consultation and quote. An experienced installer will assess your conservatory and talk you through the solutions that could work best for your home.

A very efficient first rate service. The team stripped off the old polycarbonate roof, custom made a new framework, insulated it and replaced the roof with 'tiles'. A day or two later a chap plastered the new ceiling. We were so impressed with the whole operation and how streamlined it was, but even more so with the finished room. We have achieved exactly what we wanted and we love it!

From the moment the representative came and quoted me a price and the work involved I was pleasantly surprised at the price and agreed instantly. On the fitting day the two chaps arrived on time and after discussing plans with me they got straight to work. Adam(Lukasz) and Sol(Smart)worked together as a team and the roof appeared before our eyes in hours. Finally the finish they achieved and the care taken was of a high standard. Lastly although I said I would clear up they insisted and left the garden as they found it. Many thanks to all involved

STUNNING TRANSFORMATION. Had a large P shape conservatory with a Poly sheeted panel roof which were coming to the end of their life, for years had been having companies arrive and push for a sale, in early May a new "Checkatrade" leaflet arrived and Nu-Look name took my eye. Salesman Gavyn came with samples to show construction, liked what we heard so went with Nu Look, next step Matt the surveyor approved the build agreeing it could go a head. Week of build weather looked horrendous but it held off, Gareth and Archie arrived and what professionals they were, turned up on time and made sure all materials were on hand to complete the work. They needed to deconstruct and construct framework to allow the electrical work by "Dixie" and plastering by Brett and Darren to go a head, watching Gareth cut those angled sections more so for the valley was outstanding, such a craftsman and Archie was kept on his toes. Same with Brett and Darren outstanding plaster work and gave great advice when to paint ceiling due to hot weather, Dixie finished LED lighting. We also went for building control which Nu -Look deal with via Stroma. Must not forget Emily in the office, any issues she was on it. We opted for the £100 deposit on agreement and the Novuna finance route, which we paid off soon after with an additional cost of £29 to do so, great finance company, web site and communications excellent. We had a conservatory and now have a garden room and already in these very hot conditions we feel a difference much more comfortable, so if you are thinking about replacing those poly sheets give NU-Look a call, glad we did. Thankyou all from Roger and Sandra.

We recently had a new tiled conservatory roof fitted by Nu-Look and we couldn’t be happier with the result. From start to finish all the staff were friendly and helpful. The salesmen was not pushy, he gave me a honest opinion on what needed doing and didn’t try to oversell. I would highly recommend Nu-Look to anyone that is looking to upgrade there conservatory roof to a tiled one. It’s made such a difference especially that we have been able to use it during this heat wave.

Excellent company. This is a great company wth a great product. I wanted to insulate my conservatory roof. I had several companies around to quote for the work. Nu-Look were the only company where the representative took time to listen to what my problem was and discuss a proposed solution. All the others simply tried to press a product on me without listening to the customer. Additionally all the other companies offered their “solution” at ridiculously high prices. If you want a builder who listens to his clients problem and proposes a solution that meets the client’s needs not theirs then use Nu-Look for unparalleled quality and value for money. Following my acceptance of the quote I was visited by a very professional surveyor who was like every other person associated with the company being polite and keen to answer any questions I had. When the tradesmen arrived they were bang on time. They undertook the installation quickly and to a high standard. They were professional and polite throughout. I would recommend Nu-Look without hesitation. Jeremy M - Milton Keynes
